If you have ever passed by a magazine stand, you may have noticed dozens of magazines about topics that you know nothing about. The wonderful thing about reading is that it can introduce you to something brand new through your own imagination. Magazines often provide pictures to go along with the text, but the pictures only heighten your interest in this new topic. There are simple ways in which you can improve your reading comprehension while opening up new worlds to your imagination as well.

1) Buy one new magazine a month.

Rather than pass that magazine stand by every day, stop once a month and buy one magazine on a topic you know nothing about. If you see a photography magazine and you have never taken a professional quality picture in your life, then buy the magazine and read it. Your financial investment will make sure that you at least look the magazine over, and your imagination may get the best of you and allow you to learn something new.

2) Read the book before seeing the movie.

One way in which people can become more open to reading is to compare a book to a movie. In some cases, movies are advertised months before they open. When you see an advertisement for a movie you would like to see that is based on a book, then the buy the book and read it before the movie comes out.

Reading forces us to use our imagination, and that can sometimes open up brand new worlds. When you start comparing movies to books, you may find that your imagination makes for a good movie director.

Improve Your Vocabulary through Reading

Improving your vocabulary through reading requires a little work. But as it becomes easier for you to find the proper words to express yourself, you begin to realize how important a good vocabulary is. There are several ways in which you can improve your vocabulary while reading. By employing just one of these methods, you are improving your ability to communicate.

1) Use the dictionary.

It is common for people to come across a word or phrase when reading that they do not understand, and pass it by. Welcome the opportunity and grab a dictionary when that happens to look the word up, and understand its meaning. Re-read the sentence until you understand what the author is trying to say. It may slow down your reading speed, but it will increase your vocabulary.

2) Audio books can help.

One of the problems in reading comprehension is in pronouncing the word correctly. When you prepare to read a book, find the audio version of the book and read along with it. When you come across a word you have never seen before, the audio book will pronounce it for you. When you look the word up, you will know how to pronounce it when you use it at a later time.

3) Move up to harder reading.

Strive to move up to books you never thought you could understand. As your comprehension gets better, you will be able to read more complicated books and really expand your vocabulary.

A strong vocabulary can be a tool you use for your success. Take the time to improve your vocabulary every time you read.

With increasing levels of education, and the widening of the reach of education in all societies, the capabilities to read and write have become increasingly important. There are awareness campaigns conducted in many countries to make the illiterate elders come out and learn the skills of reading and writing. Many of these campaigns achieve a good success, since they are able to motivate people to even study at late hours after finishing their responsibilities for the day. Awareness is a prime motivator that makes people do many things which they would otherwise not be interested in.

A basic awareness of how reading skills can improve the daily life is enough to grasp the attention of many illiterate people, and they are very keen to learn.  This is a great encouragement for their governments who can then deploy more resources in terms of teachers and money to carry the literacy campaign forward with increased vigor. It is a matter of pride for any government if a larger percentage of their population is fully literate.

Reading Well, a Guide

Since elementary school, people have been taught a skill that, while at first may seem an obvious one, it occasionally can be neglected, reading comprehension. Reading, especially in thick academic settings, is not necessarily the riveting reading that is done for fun. There has to be a way to gain the information and understanding in the fastest and most efficient way. This is especially true for the academic reading, which tends to be so verbally dense as to be impenetrable to anyone outside of the discipline, and even then, it is best to study ahead of time.

There are five steps to improve reading comprehension that anyone can complete with no classes or special tools. The first two of these lessons revolve around the environment of reading. By emphasizing the selection of the best place and time to do heavy reading, the author offers steps to improve comprehension that are very accessible to anyone, and easy to implement, even for the busiest reader.  The third step offered works more cerebrally than the first two practical steps. Instead of lingering on the familiar stuff, those wanting to improve their comprehension skills should focus on the new information and asking how it connects with the other information that the reader has gained in the past. In fact, spending time highlighting lines can be counterproductive, making the reader more focused on straight lines than the information itself. The fourth tip might seem unusual, but you should speed up while reading, and trust your brain to process the information, which can handle more than most people give it credit for. Finally, the fifth tip for reading improvement is the taking of copious notes. Through effective note use, the reader can not only emphasize the important parts in their own mind, but leave a track and reference for them to look back to in the future.

While academic reading can be like wading through a swamp, a few simple steps can make the reader’s life much clearer and less of a trudge to get through to find the information.
